Your Lakewood, CO acupuncture clinic
Preparing for your first visit
For your first visit, please bring a list of any pharmaceuticals, herbs, over the counter medications, and vitamins that you are currently taking. Also provide any available lab results for your current condition, and the contact information for your primary care physician. You can also provide this information electronically by filling out and submitting the pre treatment paperwork online prior to your appointment.
We recommend eating a light meal before any treatment. This will mitigate most of the common side effects of acupuncture that are listed below.
Please do not brush your tongue before any treatment. Inspection of your tongue is an important diagnostic tool used to gauge the state of your health.
The majority of the needles will be placed on the forearms, lower legs, and abdomen. Therefore we recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing that can easily be rolled up to the elbows and knees.
Your first visit
Your first visit will take 90 minutes. During this visit we will examine any documents you provide, assess your health, create a comprehensive treatment plan targeted to your health needs, and provide an initial acupuncture treatment. Because of the holistic nature of our medical practice, we will seek information about your emotional health, diet, digestion, and sleep patterns, recognizing that these elements can have strong influences on your physical health. Information from this intake session will help us better understand what is happening in your body and mind, and reveal possible patterns of disharmony.

At Foothills Acupuncture we will work with you to assure this comfort by explaining any procedure, playing soothing music, teaching you breathing techniques to ease any possible anxieties, and assuring that all inserted needles are comfortable. The needles are usually inserted and retained for 30-45 minutes. It is not uncommon for people to feel so relaxed that they fall asleep during their treatment.
Depending on your treatment plan, we may also perform cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, electrical stimulation, and/or tuina.
What to expect after treatment
Results from treatment differ from person to person, depending on their health conditions. Many experience immediate relief that may last several hours to several days. The results of acupuncture are cumulative, with each treatment building on the results of the previous one. To augment your results and help you stay healthy long after your treatments, we may encourage you to take herbs, modify your diet, or make changes to your lifestyle.
How many treatments will it take?
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can take time and multiple treatments to influence the body into a healing state. The number of treatments will vary according to the patient’s constitution, the type of ailment, and the amount of time the patient has been affected by their ailment. Though it may take several treatments to start seeing lasting results, typically patients report feeling better and more relaxed after their first treatment. Patients who have milder/more recent injuries or illnesses usually start seeing change and some lasting results in 4-6 sessions, however, depending on the severity of the problem, it can take up to 10 or more treatments to start seeing lasting change. It is important to note that acupuncture works in a cumulative fashion and therefore to reach optimal effectiveness two treatments per week may be needed. If you are unsure about what to expect or have any questions we are happy to talk through your health concerns and answer any questions that you might have. We can be contacted at 720-683-0577, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Possible Side effects
Side effects are rare with acupuncture, but occasionally patients experience mild dizziness, fatigue, euphoria, nausea, feeling achiness around the insertion site of the needles, slight bruising, etc. These side effects typically last only a short time. Following the steps described above in the "Preparing for Your First Visit" will help to mitigate any side effects.
