What is Microneedling?
Microneedling—also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) or Percutaneous Collagen Induction (PCI)—is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment designed to support healthier-looking skin. A professional microneedling device creates tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin, activating the body’s natural repair response and encouraging new collagen and elastin formation.
This gradual renewal process can improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores, acne scars, and other visible signs of aging or skin damage. With a properly designed series of treatments, the skin may appear smoother, firmer, more even, and more vibrant.
At Foothills Acupuncture, microneedling may be enhanced with hyaluronic acid, nanoneedling, biolight therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine–inspired serum infusions. These complementary therapies are carefully selected to support hydration, recovery, and your overall treatment goals.
Benefits of Microneedling

How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling uses a high-precision device equipped with short, ultra-fine needles to create tiny, controlled microchannels at a carefully selected depth in the skin. These microchannels activate the body’s natural repair response, encouraging collagen and elastin production while supporting circulation and healthy tissue renewal.
As the skin repairs and remodels itself, it may gradually become smoother, firmer, and more even in tone and texture. A properly designed series of treatments may help reduce the appearance of fine lines, enlarged pores, acne scars, stretch marks, and other textural irregularities.
Although microneedling and acupuncture are distinct treatments, they share an important therapeutic principle: carefully controlled stimulation can activate the body’s innate healing mechanisms. This comprehensive session is the starting point for first-time microneedling patients seeking facial rejuvenation, softening of fine lines and wrinkles, or improvement in the appearance and texture of their skin.
Your appointment begins with an in-depth evaluation of your skin, treatment goals, health history, and any underlying imbalances that may be contributing to your areas of concern. With your consent, initial photographs will be taken to document your starting point, and your skin will be evaluated according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. Your practitioner will also answer your questions and recommend an individualized course of treatment based on your needs and goals.
When appropriate and with your consent, an optional topical lidocaine numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area before microneedling. You will then receive a full BioLight therapy session to prepare and support the skin, followed by a customized microneedling treatment incorporating hyaluronic acid and carefully selected Traditional Chinese Medicine serums appropriate for your skin.
Treatment includes the face and neck, with additional attention given to areas affected by fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, scarring, or other identified concerns.
Following your treatment, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions and recommendations for future sessions. The cost of this initial treatment may be applied toward the purchase of an eligible four- or eight-treatment microneedling program according to the applicable program-upgrade terms.

This follow-up treatment is typically scheduled approximately one month after your initial microneedling session or according to your practitioner’s recommendations. Your appointment begins with a brief review of your skin’s response, progress, and any changes in your treatment goals. With your consent, follow-up photographs may also be taken to document changes in your skin and guide your continued care.
When appropriate and with your consent, an optional topical lidocaine numbing cream may be applied before treatment. Your session includes BioLight therapy, followed by a customized microneedling treatment incorporating hyaluronic acid and carefully selected Traditional Chinese Medicine serums appropriate for your skin.
Treatment includes the face and neck, with additional attention given to areas affected by fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, scarring, or other identified concerns. Aftercare instructions and recommendations for continued treatment will be provided following your session.
The cost of your initial treatment and first follow-up treatment may be applied toward an eligible four- or eight-treatment microneedling program. This first follow-up appointment is the final opportunity to enroll in an eligible program and receive credit for both individual sessions.

This full-spectrum program includes one 90-minute initial treatment followed by three 60-minute follow-up treatments, typically scheduled approximately one month apart or according to your practitioner’s recommendations. Herbal formulas are selected according to your Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and may be continued, adjusted, replaced, or discontinued as your symptoms, skin, and underlying patterns change. Hair thinning can be influenced by circulation, follicular health, stress, hormonal changes, nutrition, medications, genetics, and other underlying conditions. Each program begins with a detailed evaluation of your hair-loss history, overall health, scalp condition, and treatment goals. With your consent, initial and progress photographs will be taken to establish a baseline and monitor changes throughout care.
Research suggests that scalp microneedling may support hair growth in some patients. The strongest evidence currently involves androgenetic hair loss and microneedling used in combination with established treatments such as topical minoxidil. Evidence for microneedling by itself or with other topical products remains more limited.
Results vary, typically develop gradually, and cannot be guaranteed. Additional or maintenance treatments may be recommended. Patients with sudden, unexplained, patchy, inflammatory, or scarring hair loss may be referred for medical or dermatological evaluation before beginning treatment.
Important: Microneedling devices have not been specifically authorized by the FDA for treating hair loss. Scalp microneedling for hair support is an off-label application. Specialized scalp serums are selected to complement the treatment and are not represented as being injected or delivered into the scalp by the microneedling device.

Nanoneedling
What Is Nanoneedling?
Nanoneedling is a gentle, noninvasive cosmetic treatment that uses microscopic silicone or polymer tips to stimulate the skin’s outermost surface. Unlike microneedling, these tiny tips do not create channels within the deeper, living layers of the skin. What are they and how do they help?
Microneedling and nano-needling treatments may incorporate carefully selected hydrating serums to support moisture retention, improve skin comfort, and promote a smoother, more radiant appearance. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and vegetable glycerin act as humectants, attracting and retaining moisture within the skin. This can help reduce dryness, support the skin barrier, and leave the complexion feeling softer, plumper, and more hydrated.
Condition-specific Traditional Chinese Medicine serums may also be selected according to each patient’s skin type and treatment goals. These formulations can provide additional botanical support for concerns such as dryness, dullness, uneven texture, or visible signs of aging. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found throughout the body, including within the skin. It functions as a humectant, meaning it binds water and helps support hydration, flexibility, and a soft, supple appearance. Research commonly describes hyaluronic acid as capable of binding approximately 1,000 times its volume in water, although its performance depends on molecular weight, concentration, and the overall formulation. Glycerin attracts water toward the skin’s outermost layer, helping reduce dry or tight sensations while supporting a softer, smoother complexion. Research Studies
In a supplier-reported split-face study, 31 women between the ages of 40 and 55 applied an emulsion containing 3% Senescence65+ TMD® to one side of the face and a placebo to the other twice daily for 56 days. Instrument measurements found a 7.5% increase in collagen density and an 18% increase in the appearance of dermal thickness compared with baseline, with significant improvement also reported against the placebo. These findings support its cosmetic use for mature and thinning skin, but they do not establish claims that cellular aging can be delayed “by decades.” Individual results may vary.

Research Studies
In a supplier-reported split-face study, 18 volunteers between the ages of 50 and 65 applied a formula containing 5% Elastin FL+® to one side of the face and a placebo to the other twice daily for 56 days. Instrumental measurements evaluated skin thickness, luminosity, microcirculation, and wrinkle appearance. At Day 56, the treated areas showed an average thickness increase of 0.21 millimeters compared with 0.09 millimeters in the placebo areas, representing a reported statistically significant 8% improvement in skin thickness. These findings are based on a small ingredient study, and individual treatment results may vary.
