Acupuncture
The Deep Dive
‘acupuncture’
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a medical practice that utilizes the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. This treatment activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms, improves circulation, and supports the body’s ability to heal and restore healthy function.
Acupuncture—simple yet powerful. With its long and extensive history, acupuncture has been used to promote health and healing for thousands of years. When properly applied, it can be a powerful tool for helping the body resolve imbalances and restore healthy function.
‘qi’
How does acupuncture work?
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture works by moving and influencing “qi” or “chi,” which is often described as the body’s “life force” or “life energy.” From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, disease, dysfunction, and disharmony can arise when qi becomes stagnant or stuck. Freeing this stagnation helps restore the proper flow of qi, allowing the body to return to its natural, unhindered function.
The modern explanation of how acupuncture works is complex and incorporates several physiological events throughout the body that promote the healing process. To keep the explanation simple, acupuncture works because your body works. Your body responds to the insertion of acupuncture needles by activating a cascade of healing processes and regulatory mechanisms throughout the body.
To gain the greatest benefit from acupuncture, we recommend approaching your treatments in much the same way you would approach working out. A single treatment has the potential to provide meaningful relief and benefit for many health imbalances. However, just as one workout will not usually bring someone to world-class physical condition, one acupuncture treatment may not be enough to create lasting change.
The body heals at its own particular rate, which is heavily influenced by its current condition. When more significant or long-standing imbalances are present, the healing process may be hindered or progress at a slower rate.
The best and most lasting results are typically achieved through a continuous series of successive acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can also be combined with other therapeutic TCM modalities, creating a positive, synergistic effect that supports the body’s healing processes and helps it reach a more favorable state of homeostatic balance more quickly.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The short answer is no—acupuncture generally does not hurt. An estimated 90–95% of the people we treat report that the needles cause little to no discomfort. In fact, many say they do not feel the needle insertion at all.
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin—much smaller than standard I.V. or I.M. needles. The accompanying pictures compare acupuncture needles with a standard 18-gauge I.V. needle. In Picture 1, eight 32-gauge acupuncture needles are inserted into the tip of an 18-gauge I.V. needle. In Picture 2, nineteen 40-gauge acupuncture needles fit inside an 18-gauge I.V. needle. Picture 3 provides a side-by-side size comparison of a 32-gauge acupuncture needle and an 18-gauge I.V. needle.
Licensed acupuncturists receive extensive training in safe needling practices and proper insertion techniques. Our professional training included approximately 795 hours of supervised clinical practice, providing extensive hands-on experience in administering acupuncture safely, precisely, and as comfortably as possible.
Although acupuncture should not be painful, patients may occasionally experience a brief pinch during insertion or sensations such as heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull ache around the acupuncture point. These sensations are generally mild and temporary. Your comfort is always important, and the needles can be adjusted or removed if anything feels uncomfortable.

Acupuncture Services Offered at Foothills Acupuncture
Choose from flexible, single-visit acupuncture services tailored to your individual needs—without committing to a treatment program.
-
This is the essential starting point for all new acupuncture patients at Foothills Acupuncture, whether you are seeking relief from a recent injury, struggling with persistent or complex pain, or looking for answers after other approaches have provided limited results. It may be scheduled as a stand-alone treatment or serve as the foundation for ongoing care or one of our structured treatment programs.
At Foothills Acupuncture, we believe that effective pain care begins with understanding the complete picture—not simply identifying where it hurts. Your practitioner will take the time to listen to your full health history, explore the nature and progression of your symptoms, identify factors that may be contributing to your pain, and understand how your condition affects your movement, sleep, stress, and daily life.
This information, together with Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue evaluation, is used to identify underlying patterns of imbalance and develop an individualized diagnosis. You will then receive a full acupuncture treatment specifically tailored to your condition, comfort, and goals. Additional therapies—including cupping, gua sha, Tui Na, or BioLight Therapy—may be incorporated when clinically appropriate and as appointment time allows.
Following your assessment and treatment, your practitioner will explain their findings, answer your questions, and provide clear, personalized recommendations. Whether you need a single session, a series of treatments, supportive therapies, or a comprehensive pain-focused program, this appointment provides the clinical foundation needed to determine the most appropriate path forward.

At Foothills Acupuncture, pain is rarely treated as an isolated symptom. Your practitioner will review your progress, discuss changes in your condition, reassess contributing patterns, and adapt your treatment based on how your body has responded. The extended appointment allows sufficient time for a thorough, individualized acupuncture treatment while also addressing several areas of pain, tension, restriction, or dysfunction when needed.
Additional Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies—such as cupping, gua sha, Tui Na, or BioLight Therapy—may be incorporated when clinically appropriate and as appointment time allows. Designed for established patients who have completed an initial assessment, this 60-minute follow-up is the foundation of ongoing acupuncture care at Foothills Acupuncture. Each visit builds upon your previous treatments, allowing your practitioner to track your progress, evaluate changes in your symptoms, and continually refine your care as your body responds.
Your appointment begins with a focused reassessment of your current condition, pain levels, movement, function, and treatment goals. Based on these findings, you will receive a comprehensive acupuncture treatment tailored to what your body needs that day—whether the focus is reducing pain, relieving muscular tension, improving mobility, supporting recovery, or addressing underlying patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.
When clinically appropriate and as appointment time allows, supportive therapies such as cupping, gua sha, Tui Na, or BioLight Therapy may also be incorporated to enhance the treatment. Designed for patients who have completed an initial assessment, this focused 30-minute appointment may be used for continued care by established patients or as a one-time, drop-in-style treatment for temporary stress, mild or localized pain, muscular tension, headaches, or other straightforward concerns.
An Express Treatment may provide a quick therapeutic reset, be incorporated between longer appointments to maintain treatment momentum, or offer additional support during periods of increased discomfort or stress.
Your practitioner will briefly review your current symptoms and provide a targeted acupuncture treatment based on your established diagnosis and treatment plan. Designed for patients who have completed an initial assessment, this specialized follow-up may be scheduled as a one-time, drop-in-style treatment or as part of a continuing treatment plan. It combines the whole-body support of acupuncture with the hands-on, musculoskeletal focus of Chinese Tui Na medical massage. Together, these therapies provide a multifaceted approach to pain, tension, and physical dysfunction—supporting circulation and mobility, relaxing restricted tissues, calming the nervous system, and promoting healthier physical function.
At Foothills Acupuncture, we understand that pain can affect more than one area of the body. Physical discomfort may contribute to stress, disrupted sleep, fatigue, digestive changes, and difficulty participating fully in daily life. Likewise, internal imbalances and prolonged stress can influence muscular tension, recovery, and how the body experiences pain. This combined follow-up allows your practitioner to address both the physical symptoms and the broader patterns affecting your comfort and well-being.
Each appointment begins with a focused review of your progress, current symptoms, movement, and areas of restriction. Acupuncture is tailored to your established Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and may address pain while also supporting stress regulation, sleep, digestion, and other interconnected aspects of your health.
Tui Na techniques—including acupressure, rolling, kneading, stretching, soft-tissue work, and joint mobilization—are selected according to your condition, comfort, and treatment goals. Unlike a conventional relaxation massage, Tui Na is clinically focused and intended to address specific patterns of muscular tension, restricted movement, and physical dysfunction.
This follow-up may be especially beneficial for persistent muscular tension, limited mobility, overuse injuries, sports-related discomfort, stress-related tightness, and pain involving the back, neck, shoulders, hips, or other joints. It may be scheduled as an individual treatment or incorporated into a broader course of care for pain management, stress support, or recovery. Because this specialized appointment includes both acupuncture and dedicated hands-on treatment time, availability may be limited.

Acupuncture Treatment Programs
Our structured treatment programs make consistent care simpler and more affordable, giving you a clear path toward meaningful, lasting progress.
Acupuncture works cumulatively—much like exercise. A single session can help you feel better, but consistent treatment gives each visit the opportunity to build upon the last, strengthening your body’s response and supporting deeper, longer-lasting progress. Our treatment programs are designed to provide the frequency, repetition, and personalized care needed to move beyond temporary relief and work toward meaningful improvement in pain, stress, sleep, digestion, mobility, and overall function.
Programs also make staying consistent easier. Appointments can be scheduled in advance, helping you protect time for your care and maintain the treatment frequency recommended by your practitioner. Flexible automatic payment options eliminate the need to manage payment at every visit, while program savings and added benefits make comprehensive care more accessible. With your schedule and payments already organized, you can spend less time managing treatment and more energy focusing on your progress.
-
The Reset Program is an ideal starting point for patients who want to move beyond occasional symptom relief and experience the cumulative benefits of consistent acupuncture care. Much like exercise, acupuncture care is often cumulative. Each treatment may build upon the last, helping the body develop a stronger therapeutic response and supporting meaningful progress toward your health goals.

You will also receive a personalized treatment roadmap with recommendations for appointment frequency, supportive therapies, and practical steps you can take between visits.
The remaining six appointments are 60-minute follow-up treatments. Your practitioner will monitor your response, evaluate changes in your symptoms, and continually adapt treatment as your needs evolve. Whether you are addressing pain, stress, disrupted sleep, digestive concerns, headaches, restricted movement, or a combination of symptoms, the Reset Program provides the consistency needed to begin building meaningful progress.

The Restore Program provides Foothills Acupuncture’s most comprehensive course of structured acupuncture care. It is designed for patients with long-standing, recurring, or complex concerns who need greater consistency, continued evaluation, and sufficient treatment time to work toward deeper and more sustainable progress.
Acupuncture care is often cumulative, much like exercise or physical rehabilitation. Each treatment may reinforce the work of previous sessions, allowing your body’s response to develop over time. A longer course of care also gives your practitioner the opportunity to address different layers of a condition, adapt treatment as symptoms change, and work beyond short-term relief toward improved function and stability.
The Restore Program may be especially appropriate for chronic or widespread pain, multiple treatment areas, reduced mobility, recurring injuries, prolonged stress, disrupted sleep, digestive concerns, headaches, fatigue, and interconnected symptoms that have developed over time. Treatment remains individualized throughout the program and evolves with your progress.
The program begins with a comprehensive 90-minute initial appointment. Your practitioner will listen to your complete health history, examine how your symptoms may be connected, establish an individualized Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis, and provide your first full acupuncture treatment. You will also receive a personalized treatment roadmap with recommendations for treatment frequency, supportive therapies, and practical steps to follow between visits.
The eighth and fifteenth appointments are extended 90-minute progress evaluations and treatments. These dedicated reassessments allow your practitioner to evaluate changes in your symptoms, movement, function, and overall health; refine your diagnosis; and update your treatment priorities for the next stage of care.
The other eighteen appointments are comprehensive 60-minute follow-up treatments. Every session builds upon your previous care and is adapted to your condition, response, and treatment priorities at that point in the program.

The Express Treatment Program is a quick, convenient, and economical way for established patients who have completed an initial assessment to receive consistent acupuncture care. Designed primarily as a four-week series of weekly treatments, it offers focused support for everyday stress, mild or localized pain, muscular tension, and continued progress toward established treatment goals.
The benefits of acupuncture may build cumulatively, and even shorter treatments can provide meaningful support when received consistently. Weekly Express Treatments give your body a regular opportunity to release tension, support nervous-system regulation, manage mild discomfort, and reset from the physical and emotional demands of everyday life. When clinically appropriate, appointments may also be completed closer together for patients who would benefit from a more concentrated schedule.
Each visit includes a brief review of your current symptoms followed by a focused acupuncture treatment based on your established Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and treatment plan. These sessions are especially useful for patients who want to continue care after completing a larger program, maintain previous progress, manage periodic stress or tension, or receive additional support between comprehensive appointments.
Because each appointment is limited to 30 minutes, treatment focuses on one straightforward concern and includes acupuncture only. Patients with multiple treatment areas, changing symptoms, or more complex concerns may benefit from a comprehensive 60- or 90-minute follow-up appointment.
